ENGLAND HAVE WON THE WORLD CUP ... BY THE WIDEST OF MARGINS!Okay, so it wasn't the widest of margins (65 runs), but it was a pretty comprehensive win for David Snellgrove's England side over the hosts South Africa in the Grand Final of the IMC Over-50s World Cup.As evening fell on Newlands Stadium, the play continued, and it was almost fully dark by the time England captain David Snellgrove held the cup aloft.Following a 2-hour delayed start due to rain, South Africa won the toss and chose to field in a match reduced to 40 overs a-side. The decision didn't provide dividends as England steadily put on 61 for the first wicket, then 44 for the second, and 88 for the third. The constant factor throughout was Giles Ecclestone, who scored a magnificently paced 120, cutting and driving especially well. Naseer Ahmed provided excellent support with 50 from 42 balls, and despite losing a flurry of wickets at the end, England never lost momentum and ended up with a highly competitive 267/8 from their 40 overs.South Africa's chase started poorly, with Louis Koen hooking Richard Cooper in the first over and Richard Trotman taking a stunning catch running back from slip. From then on, the Proteas' chase never really got going. They fell further and further behind the required run rate and with 10 overs to go needed to score at 13 an over. Only Alan Dawson showed the necessary initiative and his 92 from 77 balls capped off a great tournament for him.Off-spinner Martyn Gidley took 3/36 and paceman Richard Cooper nabbed 3/39.England ran out winners by 65 runs in fading light in front of a good Newlands crowd. It was a deserved victory for England, who had prepared wonderfully for this tournament, were fit, had enviable player depth, and had only lost one game in the tournament. They were undoubtedly the best team in the World Cup.Congratulations! It was also a marvelous effort by South Africa to reach the final. They played some exceptional cricket during the final and had a lot of home-town expectations to deal with. Congratulations to them as well.Full match streaming: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0beL4nO8Lck&ab_channel=VeteransCricketAssociationofSouthAfricaScorecard: cricclubs.com/VeteransLeagueofSouthAfrica/fullScorecard.do?matchId=1283&clubId=22082The tournament Closing Ceremony dinner was held at Western Province Cricket Club after the game. I will provide details on that in a separate post. The IMC Over-50s Cricket World Cup was a raging success. All 14 teams that participated had a fantastic time. The cricket was competitive and high-quality and played in great spirit. The event itself was a logistical tour-de-force, with 56 matches played at 23 venues, and went off without a hitch. Enormous thanks to Roger Moult and his team for the unbelievable work they put in.The International Masters Cricket (IMC) committee would like to thank all the players, supporters, umpires, scorers, commentators, sponsors, organisers, host clubs, ground staff, and everyone else involved in making this World Cup an absolutely incredible success!Photos courtesy of Matchpixsa ...
